Heritage Education and Research Project was founded on 11 April 2022, by five individuals from Langa, Gugulethu, Heideveld, Manenberg, and Nyanga, to:
Record the history of community facilities such as community centers/halls, stadiums, and open fields used as a hub of activities for young and old people in sports, arts and culture. All HERP members are volunteers .
Intergrational dialogue for a secure future
Record the history of community facilities such as community centers/halls, stadiums, and open fields that were used as hubs of activities for young and old people in arts, culture, and sports and individuals who are products of these facilities and some are national icons.
Educate young people on the role played by these facilities in the development of these different communities and in bringing different communities across racial lines together through arts, culture, and sporting activities. To have strong moral generation focus with community problem solving skills in mechanism through bringing community divide.
Through moral regeneration, ensuring active, committed, and participatory citizens, safe and thriving communities.

Herp has recruited youth between the ages 15 and 21 to encourage youth from Cape Flats communities (Gugulethu, Nyanga, Langa, Heideveld and Manenberg) to get involved in oral history projects to establish both the commonalities and differences in people’s experiences of apartheid. To train them to research and present the life-stories and tangible objects from personal archives (memorabilia, photos, certificates, newspaper cuttings, etc.), as these relate to highlighting the history and heritage of significant sites with elders / veterans from the community.
To establish both commonalities and differences in people's experiences with community recreational facilities. To vitalize the stories a nd memories of significant community recreational facilities that have come invisible or that have been erased in some ways from the community experience or association
The main areas of learning will be the following:
• Research, writing and communication
• Photography and videography
• Heritage Route development
• Exhibition design
• Events Management
Opportunities for experience in the use of the following specific skills:
• Interview skills.
• Videography and photography as a form of storytelling
• Portrait photography (using the Van Kalker, George Halett, Heseltine and Huiskombuis collections as references)
• Research practice (archival exploration and creation)
• Curatorial practise
• Production (recording / documenting, editing, mixing and presentation)
